"It is like a dumb man who has had a dream. He knows about it but cannot tell it."

- Mumon's comment on Joshu's Dog, Zen Flesh, and Zen Bones compiled by Paul Reps

Oh my, I have to admit that I had forgotten that "dumb" had a second definition meaning unable to speak. Or rather, that was the first definition, was it not? Either way, I think both definitions have an interesting impact on the passage. It's like a cross which becomes an x as the wheel or fan turns about. Quite different and yet somehow made of the same stuff. Which one is the original meaning? The spoken intent or the one which was recieved?

Hmm, I was hoping you could tell me. Because I can't tell the difference between either.

"It is the people who are outside of the monastery who feel its atmosphere. Those who are practicing actually do not feel anything. I think this is true for everything. When we hear the sound of the pine trees on a windy day, perhaps the wind is just blowing, and the pine tree is just standing in the wind. That is all that they are doing. But the people who listen to the wind in the tree will write a poem, or will feel something unusual. That is, I think, the way everything is."

- Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

It is the way everything is, Suzuki-san. Because some amount of separation is needed in order to see, feel, and know exactly what is going on. In reading a story, we say, "How vivid and adventurous their lives are!" while searching for an indication that our lives might be anything like this. Surely, our lives are vivid and adventurous and chalk full of meaning. We're just too busy living it to separate from it far enough to see. But it is there, I promise you.
